Support for Johnny

As you may be aware, Johnny is heading off very soon (in three weeks!) to Mozambique, to go to Iris Ministries. Through miraculous provision, Johnny has got a plane ticket to Johannesburg, however still needs to get to a ticket to Mozambique. If you would personally like to join Blueprint in supporting Johnny, you can do this through Blueprint by making a deposit into the Blueprint account (02 0560 0152467 000) and add “Johnny Support” into the reference details.

Pray: Please pray for a quick Visa application process so that he can get into the country on time. His passport needs to be sent to London and back in time before he flies out.

Well, time is flying. Super rugby is well into its swing and its freezing. But at least we can warm the cockles of our heart with another delightful Blueprint service!

This Sunday

This week the speaker is me, Will Durbin. I’ll be speaking on Matthew 3:13-17, the baptism of Jesus. I’ll be discussing what we learn of the character of Jesus through this passage, and what baptism means for us. So come along!

Don’t forget cushions and lamps!

If you have any spare cushions or lamps that would look nice at Blueprint, we’d love to have them. We’re aiming to improve the ambience at services so any donations would be grand.

Oh and by the way…

This last Sunday we put out the sign for Blueprint, and it worked! Someone came in who hadn’t been before, so thats good! If anyone out there wants this to happen more and has creative ability we’d love for you to make our sign look awesome. If your interested email blueprintchurch@gmail.com

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Yesterday was day of remembrance, as we remember those lives lost 98 years ago in Turkey.

If you were at Blueprint on sunday and heard Jay, you will recall him talk about the Hebrew word aharit. The word is a concept for future (think Jeremiah 29:11), or end; however, the concept is looking backwards to the past, and aligning oneself with history. It literally means “afterward, backwards or after part.” The picture that best depicts this is the rowboat, where the rower looks back to where they have been, but the future is toward his back.

All of us, in some way or another, are not fully satisfied with where we are at. However, if in our own strength, we try to row to where we would like to be, we must look over our shoulder, and we end up rowing in circles. Psalm 40:8 says “I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart,” but we cannot achieve this in our own strength. We cannot even begin to want it.

Yet as we look back to what Christ did, that we died with Him, that we are the dead, we realize just how precious that blood is. Spurgeon said, “there is no motive for holiness so great as that which streams from the veins of Jesus.” Look to Him, then your future will be secured. Our future is really in the process of becoming. Rowing the boat never allows to see where all of this is going.

And there’s something kind of exciting about that.

Check out the new Events tab for things happening around the place.

By the way, Jay’s essay can be found here, and hopefully his message (recorded on Vaughan’s phone) will make it up on-line soon.

You may noticed that we have a few children running around Blueprint, here’s a few thoughts from Mon to keep in mind.

If you see a child who may hurt themselves (spill hot drink, play with fire, fall off chair, roll down stairs), know that you can step in. Any parent is going to be more grateful that their child cried because they got a fright being told off by a stranger, than spend three weeks beside a hospital bed with their kid who has a cracked skull.

Parents would often love another set of hands but feel their child is their responsibility. If you want to dance with a child, take them out the back to play with cars because they are unsettled etc, then just ask. the worse that will happen is you will be told that all is fine, best that could happen is someone could have a much needed break and a chance to reconnect with God uninterrupted from potty breaks.

Children can be loud, frustrating and smelly. But there is a reason Jesus told us to watch the children. Here are a few things I noted watching Isabella and Billie playing in front of me one Sunday:

1. Kids dance because they are happy, that is it. There are no more reasons that pure, simple, uncomplicated joy

2. They dress how they feel like on the day (parents permitting) they don’t wear masks, they don’t overthink

3. They trust their parents unconditionally. They may have a sulk because its not what they wanted, but they know that their parents love them at the same time, and never question that or get talked or debated out of it. Their parents are never going to leave them and will ensure their safety and welfare at all time

4. At a young age, when a parent leaves their sight they cry, any amount of space is too much. If they cant be seen, or they sense they are far from them, they are upset and will search until they find them again. As soon as that parent comes back into view they stop crying.

5. They show emotion unhindered. They don’t hold back tears because of what people think. They don’t suppress a laugh in case people look at them. they are just themselves

These are things we can learn from, and speak a lot in to the character of God and how we should be in his presence.

Mon.

A note from Abby

Hi all,

Just wanted to send a note saying I felt like I missed the mark when I spoke at church a couple of weeks ago. I felt my message was not cohesive or formed enough for the main points to be easily received. Attached is a brief summary, please take the time to read and consider the questions at the end.

Thanks for journeying with me as I learn and we all grow with God.
Bless,

Abby Shaw

You can see Abby’s notes here: http://www.blueprintchurch.com/sermons/?sermon_id=36

Peace

In years gone by Blueprinters have given up things like coffee, facebook, even their beds, in the lead up to easter. Steve Tollestrup from TearFund had this to say about lent;

“Lent is the time when we pause, consider, and intentionally put material things in their proper position. It is a time to enquire how deeply we are connected to the world of stuff and attachements and ask, ‘How much is enough in an unequal world?’. Importantly, it is also an opportunity to identify in a limited sense with the suffering of Christ and actively engage and be in soldarity with the poor.”

On that note, here are a couple of things going on with Blueprint at the moment….

-Alana Geary has recently launched her not-for-profit company BrotherSister, which is raising money for the displaced people of Burma. She is selling ethically traded baby garments, with designs on them drawn by some beautiful Thai children. ALL of the profit from the sale of these garments is donated though an organisation called Partners. Check out ww.partnersworld.org.nz

To purchase these beautiful tees, visit http://felt.co.nz/shop/giftsoflove Do it now!

-Compassion Nepal is having a fundraising trek to Everest Base Camp. This will be later in the year around November, when the weather is best. We need to confirm numbers soon, so talk to Catherine if you or someone you know would be keen! I hear it’s real beautiful up there. More info is here: http://www.compassionnepal.com/blog/post/12/stretching-the-legs.

-Don’t forget, there will be a meal at the new Goatshed this Sunday after church! The new goatshed is at 78 Owen St, Newtown (just down the road from the old goatshed, around the corner from Leo’s Fish and Chip shop). Bring food if you want to eat food!

Hey guys,

Busy weekend for some! Starting Friday is Passionfest – which you may be sick of hearing about by now. If you are going and haven’t sorted a ride: you need to do so otherwise you’ll have to train out ($10 to Waikanae). If you need help sorting out a ride, contact Lauryn on 0211507488.

Note: If you’re making soap, remember to use essential oils to make it smell good.

In other news; the Sunday service is still on, Mr R. Lawton will be bringing the Word and we have Luke Parker, a songwriter for Parachute band leading us in worship. Check him out here: http://lukeparker.bandcamp.com/

PS. There will be baked goods.

Peace!
